The objective of publishing this book is to provide authenticated information on pharmaceutical substances that are commonly used in both Ayurveda and Unani systems as well as those that are being introduced into clinical practice. The last few decades saw a rapid increase in the use of Ayurvedic and Unani medicines in clinical practice and extension of their applications in various other medical domains. As such, considerable contribution has been made in the fields of pharmacology and therapeutics. The clinical uses of many medicinal substances have also been well documented in this book. The scope for using Indian traditional medicines (I-OTMs) as investigational tools is widespread and limitless. The book will also be useful for the purpose of education and research in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. The book is an attempt to provide authenticated information on pharmaceutical substances that are commonly used in both Ayurveda and Unani systems as well as those that are being introduced into clinical practice. This edition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia contains monographs on 651 medicinal substances, entries for 639 have been revised after detailed review by expert members of Expert Committees for revision for the respective monograph group. Changes have also been incorporated in 29 monographs after scrutinising available literature. The earlier editions of the Indian Pharmacopoeia were published in 1952, 1960, 1972 ,1982, 1995, 2000 & 2005.
