Pupils working in a number of schools will benefit from the deployment of a new energy efficiency product.
A solar generation plant at Liverpool School, in Stockton Heath, has been purchased by Enbridge and will be installed at the school next month.
The Energy Savings Trust (EST) has funded the purchase of a 10kW solar photovoltaic system, and is encouraging all schools in the area to take advantage of the educational benefits that can be achieved.
Dr Jack Pascoe, Energy Efficiency Manager at Enbridge Energy, said: “The installation of solar energy systems in schools is great for schools, the local community and national and international government bodies as it offers a cost-effective way of reducing their carbon emissions.
“It is also beneficial to the environment, because every kilowatt-hour of solar energy produced is displacing the emission of approximately two kilowatt-hours of carbon dioxide.
“In this case, the system will be used to heat the building, providing warm water to the school, which will reduce the consumption of fuel.
“There are many other benefits for schools including reducing costs, increasing the capacity of the school in relation to its heating systems, improving the environment and reducing the need to rely on fossil fuels.
“We are delighted to be able to offer support to schools in the area to help them manage their energy use.”
Headteacher at Stockton Heath School, Jon Harwood, commented: “We are very excited about the new photovoltaic energy system we will be installing in May, which will help us to become more energy efficient and reduce our energy costs, while also encouraging others to reduce their carbon footprint.
“It will also produce income for the school, which we can use to help with our running costs and towards future investment in the school, such as developing our science and technology department, which will see our children taking part in more projects and curriculum based assessments.
“It is also an opportunity for our pupils to take part in many different subjects which will ac619d1d87
