This is the bizarre incident that occurred this week.
The German-Jewish financier and diamond dealer, Baron Edmond de Rothschild, walks into a kosher bakery in the heart of New York’s diamond district and demands to know if there is a problem with the cigars in the bakery’s cigarette case.
The owner explains that the cigars are not kosher and de Rothschild replies: “Well, you can give me a discount.”
The owner, who is German and therefore speaks fluent German, and de Rothschild, both in Hebrew, look at each other and start laughing. The owner offers to have a special plastic-covered box made for de Rothschild in order to store the cigarettes.
But before de Rothschild leaves the bakery, he asks to look at the plastic-covered box and becomes disgusted when he sees what it contains.
“It is full of ribs,” he tells the owner.
“Ribs?”
“Yes.”
“But they are the most expensive kosher product in the world.”
A second problem arises at the World Trade Center when de Rothschild orders a box of “brick” Havana cigars at the Kresge Company cigar shop at the WTC.
The shop owner goes into the back room and shows de Rothschild a box of kosher cigars which he had sold to a few Jewish customers. The cigars are a brilliant red-gold colour.
De Rothschild tells the shop owner that he cannot sell such a box of cigars. The owner responds by telling de Rothschild that the Kresge Company is a well-known company that has a lot of Jewish customers and therefore uses a very good quality cigars.
